Strangers to Ourselves Irony

Strangers to Ourselves Irony

The irony of mental hospitals

According to the author, many people are willing to go for mental checkups in various health facilities. Sadly, there is unprofessionalism in mental health care facilities because they do not attend to clients as expected. A good example is when Ray visits a mental checkup facility. When he gets into the facility, he stays there for several hours before any healthcare practitioner attends to him. The slow process of mental checkups discourages Ray from visiting the facility again. Therefore, mental facilities are doing the opposite of what is expected of them.

The irony of healthcare staff

The healthcare workers in hospitals, including doctors, nurses, and caregivers, are all expected to finish their education before they are posted in various healthcare facilities. Realistically, all these healthcare workers have gone to school and acquired the necessary experience to offer quality services. Ironically, cases of mental disorder misdiagnosis are on the rise. When the narrator visits the mental facility, she is misdiagnosed, and this contradicts her expectations because the doctors are highly qualified, yet they end up doing shoddy jobs.

Dramatic irony

Dramatic irony occurs when the audience is aware of something that the characters in the text do not know. In the novel, the audience knows that some cases of mental disorders are associated with patients' culture. However, most doctors in the text know little about this fact and end up misdiagnosing patients. For instance, when Babu attends a medical facility to see the doctor, she is misdiagnosed because the doctor does not know her problem stems from her Hinduism customs and beliefs.
