The Speaker
The speaker seems to be experiencing a moment of déjà vu or something similar to that odd sensation of having experienced a moment in time before. As with déjà vu, certain senses alight upon a solidly familiar memory: the smell of grass, a sound that seems like sighing and the visual accompaniment of lights on a shore. What is slightly less concrete and palpable is the memory of a lover now dead, but all that changes in an instant with the recall of a certain memory.
The Dead Lover
The man is now separated from his one-time lover by death. The moment of déjà vu is one of recall in which she is at first vague as a result of the passage of time. In an instant, however, she becomes as fully realized in his senses as the grass and lights. This transformation occurs as the result of a singular moment recalled: a turn simple turn of her neck.
