Quotes

“A guy will call. After I'm fast asleep, it happens. These calls will come all night if I don't unplug the phone. Some loser will call tonight just after the bars close to say he's sitting cross-legged on the floor in his apartment. He can't sleep without having these terrible nightmares. In his dreams, he sees planes full of people crash. It's so real and then no one will help him. He can't sleep. He can't get help. He tells me he's got a rifle tucked up under his chin and he wants me to give him one good reason not to pull the trigger.”

Tender Branson

Most of the callers, who portray a suicidal temperament, trust that phoning Tender Branson would aid them to resolve their quandaries. The persistent calls infer that many people are withstanding anguish which would not permit them to sleep tranquilly. The nightmares epitomize the unconscious qualms which could trigger suicidal episodes. Some stresses are so penetrating that suicidal individuals contemplate that dying is the only course to dodge their torments.

“The girls you meet are never very far from their worst-case scenario. A harem of women will be clutching their telephones on the brink and asking you to call back, please, call back. Please. Call me a sexual predator, but when I think of predators I think of lions, tigers, big cats, sharks. This isn't so much a predator versus prey relationship. This isn't a scavenger, a vulture, or a laughing hyena versus a carcass. This isn't a parasite versus a host. We're all miserable together. It's the opposite of a victimless crime. What's most important is you need to put the stickers in public telephones. Try inside dirty phone booths near bridges over deep water. Put them next to taverns where people with no place to go get thrown out at closing time.”

Tender Branson

The girls’ situation is despondent; hence, they are expectant that Tender Branson would unshackle them from their desolation. They are unconscious of the reality that Branson is as dejected as them. Although Tender Branson asserts that he is not a ‘sexual predator’, or ‘scavenger or parasite’, his deeds render him an unscrupulous persona who hoodwinks victims about his prospect of emancipating them from their griefs , yet he only heartens them to self-destruct. The stickers that his exploits to market his work are unconditionally misleading; hence, Tender Branson is an outright vulture who preys on the girls’ defenselessness.

“The government found me and most of the other survivors by our letters of confession we sent back to the church district colony every month. We didn't know we were writing and sending our wages to church elders who were already dead and in Heaven. We couldn't know that caseworkers were reading our tally every month of how many times we swore or had unpure thoughts. Now there was nothing I could tell the caseworker that she didn't already know.”

Tender Branson

The letters are pointers of the latency of the indoctrination which the church elders had engaged to condition survivors such as Tender Branson. Brainwashing is so authoritative that its upshot lingers on even after the church elders’ departure. The letters outline all of the survivors’ targets which streamlines the case workers’ intervention. Survivors’ oral confessions would not be compulsory considering that they are downright delineated in the letters.
