Crow Black With a Blue Tint (Visual Imagery)

As Sweetness attempts to justify why she didn't allow her daughter to refer to her as anything other than "Sweetness," she says that, in addition to their lack of resemblance in skin color, Lula Ann "has funny-colored eyes, crow black with a blue tint—something witchy about them, too." In this example of visual imagery, diction such as "crow" and "witchy" implies that Sweetness believes there is something malevolent about her daughter's dark eyes.

She Turned Blue-Black Right Before My Eyes (Visual Imagery)

While commenting on the surprising occurrence of Lula Ann's dark skin, Sweetness says, "Her birth skin was pale like all babies’, even African ones, but it changed fast. I thought I was going crazy when she turned blue-black right before my eyes." In this example of visual imagery, Sweetness emphasizes the shock she felt at her daughter's skin's rapid darkening, speaking of the moment it changed in terms suitable for describing a hallucination.

Jump Back Before Frowning (Kinesthetic Imagery)

Sweetness says she didn't take baby Lula Ann out very often because when she pushed Lula Ann in the baby carriage "people would lean down and peek in to say something nice and then give a start or jump back before frowning." In this example of kinesthetic imagery, Sweetness illustrates the dramatic physical responses people had to the shock of discovering a dark-skinned baby in a light-skinned woman's carriage by describing the movement of people jumping back in surprise and disappointment.
