Kything

“Kything” is the telepathic technique through which Meg and Charles Wallace are able to communicate while he is travelling through space and time. With kything, Meg is able to see what Charles is seeing, and interpret his emotional state. She is able to influence his journey, as shown by her rescuing him with her singing of the magical prayer.

Ananda

Ananda is the new dog that appears to the family in their state of distress. Meg is the one that calls the dog Ananda, which means happiness and highest joy. Ananda appears at just the right moment to aid Meg in her kything with Charles.

The star-watching rock

The star-watching rock is the place where Daniel is able to travel through space and time. He recites the prayer that Mrs. O’Keefe told him on that spat, and help arrives in the form of a magical unicorn that will help him through his journey. The name of the spot is connected to the act of praying to the stars for help.

Past influencing the present

The novel revolves around the importance of the past and the way it influences the present. Charles Wallace travels back in time to make crucial changes to certain moments that will prevent the nuclear war. In his journey, he discovers that the key lies in a brotherly feud that has lasted throughout centuries, repeated itself through different successors, a feud fuelled by jealousy, greed and desire for power on one side, and the opposite of that on the other.
