In 2008, on the 23rd of May, at the 61st Cannes Film Festival, the film Synecdoche, New York was released for the first time. Directed by Charlie Kaufman, which was his debut film, the film Synecdoche, New York tells an unusual story about a theater director who decides to create the most unique play in the world. Suffering from love and incomprehensible diseases, he erects a scenery-based copy of New York in an old abandoned warehouse.
An extraordinary and dark film, Synecdoche, New York is classified as an example of drama and art house genre, which is the best background for the eternal questions that are raised in the film. To the questions developed in the film belong such as matters true relationships, truth and falsehood, the meaning of a fleeting human existence in this contradictory and absurd world. Some critics claim the film to be mediocre, some consider it to be brilliant. Nevertheless the film has few awards and few nominations. To the first belong Gotham Independent Film Awards for the Best Acting Ensemble, and Independent Spirit awards for the Best Debut Film. To the second belong nominations for the Best Original Screenplay at Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, and for the Best Screenplay at Independent Spirit award.
