T2 Trainspotting (2017) is the sequel to 1996's smash-hit Trainspotting (which made $72 million against a budget of only $1.7 million). It stars many of the actors from the first film (like Ewan McGregor, who reprised his role as Mark Renton) and follows Renton as he returns to Scotland after 20 years abroad. After he returns, he reunites with his old friends Sick Boy, Spud, and Begbie. In the film, the boys are up to their old antics again. First, they fraudulently apply for a 100,000 euro grant from the European Union. They also write memoirs, do drugs (particularly cocaine), and spend time in prison.
T2 was nominated for only a few smaller awards, the most prominent of which were the BAFTA Awards for Scotland. At BAFTA Scotland, it was nominated for the following awards: Best Actor for Ewan McGregor and Best Actor for Robert Carlyle. It won the following awards at that ceremony: Best Actor for Ewen Bremner, Best Director (Fiction) for Danny Boyle, and Best Feature Film. However, unlike the first film, T2 was only a moderate financial success. Against a budget of 18 million Euros, it made back 42.1 million Euros at the box office. Ultimately, T2 was a moderate success. The critics consensus on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reads: "T2 Trainspotting adds an intoxicating, emotionally resonant postscript to its classic predecessor, even without fully recapturing the original's fresh, subversive thrill."
