Teaching a Stone to Talk Metaphors and Similes

Simile to Describe the Sun

The narrator and her husband had gone to see an eclipse. The narrator described the sun as, ‘The sun was a wide crescent, like a segment of tangerine.’ The simile builds imagery by likening the shape of the sun to a segment of tangerine.

Similes to Describe the Eclipse

The narrator used similes to describe the eclipse that they saw on top of a hill facing The Yakima Valley. The eclipse is described as, ‘At once the disk of sky slid over the sun like a lid. The sky snapped over the sun like a lens cover.’ This description has likened how the sky slid over the sun to how a lid slides over a particular container.

Simile to Describe the Ring of Light

A ring of light was seen in the sky which the narrator described as, ‘The ring is as small as one goose in a flock of migrating geese.’ The narrator used the simile to illustrate the size of the ring of light in comparison to the sky.

Simile to Describe a Smoke Ring

The narrator described a smoke ring seen in the sky as, ‘It was as useless as a memory, it was off kilter and hollow and wretched as a memory.’ The simile has likened the smoke ring to a memory for both were useless to her.

Simile to Describe the Time that the Eclipse Occurred

The narrator used a simile to describe the time that the eclipse occurred. It is described as, ‘ It was as dark as night.’ This is a simile that likened that time of day to be as dark as night immediately the eclipse occurred.
