Chapter 1 - The Human Body: An Orientation - Review Questions - Page 21: 5

Answer

(a) the wrist (b) the hip bone (c) the nose (d) the toes (e) the scalp

Work Step by Step

Keep in mind that directional terms are based on the body being in anatomical position, where the body is erect, feet apart, head and toes pointed forward, and arms at the sides with palms facing forward. (a) The wrist is distal because it is further from the trunk than the elbow is. (b) The hip bone is lateral because it is away from the midline of the body compared to the umbilicus. (c) The nose is superior because it is above the chin. (d) The toes are anterior because they are on the frontside of the body, compared to the heel which is on the backside of the body (posterior). (e) The scalp is superficial because it is toward the surface of the body; whereas, the skull is below it and is deeper.
