The region of the sarcolemma opposite the synaptic end bulb of a motor neuron is called the motor end plate; it is the myofiber portaion of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). In this part of the sarcolema , there are integral transmembrane proteins that are receptors for acetylcholine (ACH); each motor endplate has about 36 million of thes ACH receptors.
The membrane of the motor endplate is thronwn into many folds (junctional folds) and deep groves which increase the surface area for ACHR-ACH reactions
