Chapter 11 - The Muscular System - Checkpoint - Page 357: 15

Answer

Kegel exercises are done to strengthen muscles of the pelvic floor. These muscles include the levator ani and the coccygeus. Components of the levator ani: Pubococcygeus--main part Puborectalis Iliococcygeus The coccygeus muscle is located posterior to the levator ani in the pelvic floor.

Work Step by Step

The pelvic floor functions to support pelvic viscera. It also supports the fetal head during dilation of the cervix at childbirth. Because it also supports vagina, urethra and anal canal, damage to these muscles or general weakness of pelvic floor muscles can lead to incontinence of different types. Stress incontinence is often a result of pelvic floor weakness. Kegel exercises are indicated in pelvic floor dysfunction.
