Chapter 11 - The Muscular System - Checkpoint - Page 363: 18

Answer

There are nine muscles that cross the shoulder joint. Of these, seven have their origins o the scapula: these are called the scapular muscles. The remaining two have their origins on the axial skeletal and are appropriately called axial muscles.

Work Step by Step

The scapular muscles are deltoid, subscapularis , supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres major, teres minor, and coracobrachialis. Theses originate from different areas of the scapula--acromion, spine of scapula, fossae of scapula, angle of scapula and coracoid process of scapula. The pectoralis major and the latissimus dorsi, the axial muscles, have there origins on the spines of lumbar vertebrae, and on crests of the ilium and the sacrum.
