The superior extensor retinaculum is located distally in the leg, just above the ankle It is attached to the anterior aspects of the tibia and the fibula.
The tendons that pass under this structure are those of the extensor digitorum longus, the peroneus tertius , the tendon of the tibialis anterior and that of the extensor hallucis longus.
The inferior extensor retinaculum is "Y" shaped: the inferior part--the foot of the Y-- is attached latterly to the calcaneum; The upper arm of the Y is attached to the medial maleolus, while the lower arm of the Y is attached to the plantar aponeurosis
