Damaged neurons do not usually regenerate/repair. However, a damaged neuron in the peripheral nervous system may repair, if the Schwann cells are healthy and are able to reconstitute the neurilemma tube, and if scar tissue does not form quickly enough to to block the path of the regenerating axon.

The function of the regeneration tube formed by the Schwann cells is to guide the new/regenerating axon from the proximal end of the damaged area into the distal end of the neurilemma tube that was occupied by the original axon.
