When ACH binds to membrane receptors, it opens up cation channels that allow Na+ ions, and Ca++ ions into the cell, but permits the outflow of K+ ions. The influx of Na+ ions is greater than the efflux of K+ ions , so the result is a depolarizing graded potential. On the other hand the binding of the neurotransmitter glycine to membrane receptors opens up ion channels that let CL- anions into he cell. The result is a hyperpolarization of the neuron.
