A synapse is the structure where two neurons meet, or where a neuron makes contact with an effector cell (muscle cell or gland cell). The site is called a synapse, but there is a very small space between presynaptic cell and postsynaptic cell. This space between the presynaptic membrane and the post synaptic membrane is known as the synaptic cleft.
Neurotransmitters from vesicles in the presynaptic membrane are released into the synaptic cleft, cross over by diffusion, and bind with receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. This binding usually results in changes in permeability in the postsynaptic membrane.
