Myelination electrically insulates axons. As a result, nerve impulses must jump from unmyelinated gap (Node of Ranvier) to unmyelinated gap in progression along a myelinated axon. This is a method of impulse conduction called saltatory conduction. Conduction is faster along myelinated nerve fibers than along unmyelinated ones.
Myelination increases from infancy to adulthood. Consequently, speed of motion is potentially greater, and coordination of movements is better in adults than in babies, and very young children.
