The spinal cord has two expansions or enlargements: the upper enlargement extends from the fourth cervical vertebra to the first thoracic vertebra (C4-T1). The cervical enlargement receives nerves from, and sends nerves to the upper limbs and parts of the chest.
The lower or lumbar enlargement extends from the 9th to the 12 thoracic vertebra. It deals mainly with the nerve supply to and from the lower limbs.
