The cranial meninges--dura mater, arachnoid mater , and pia mater-- surround and protect the brain. These coverings are continuous with the meninges of the spinal cord (SC).

In the cranium, the dura--the outer menix-- has two layers ( periosteal, outer layer ; and meningeal, inner layer) which are fused, except in certain places. The dura is the outermost layer of meninges ; it is positioned between the periosteum of the cranial bones and the arachnoid mater. The arachnoid is the middle layer, and the pia mater is the innermost menix; it covers, and adheres to the brain.
