The reticular formation (RF) consists of a loose network of gray matter and white matter. The structure begins at the superior end of the spinal cord and extends throughout the brain stem (BS) to the inferior border of the diencephalon. The RF has both ascending sensory fibers, and descending motor fibers.

The ascending fibers are responsible for consciousness and the maintenance of alertness, awareness and orientation. On the other hand, the descending fibers function in the regulation of muscle tone, heart beat, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
