Answer
The cerebellum constitutes about ten percent (1/10) of the volume of the brain. It is located posterior to the medulla and pons and inferior to the posterior part of the cerebrum. The transverse groove (fissure) separates the cerebellum from the cerebrum. From a superior or inferior view, the cerebellum resembles a butterly. The deeply folded section is the vermis. The lateral segments --the wings-- are the cerebellar hemispheres. Each hemispheres comprises an anterior lobe, a posterior lobe and flocculonodular lobe separted by grooves.
Work Step by Step
The anterior and posterior lobes are responsible for supervising subconscious skeletal muscle movements. The flocculonodular node is concerned with the maintenance of balance and equilibrium.
Generally, the most important of the function of the cerebellum is the evaluation of how movements initiated by the motor areas of the cerebrum are executed.
