Receptors that are separate cells generate graded potentials which cause release of neurotransmitters through exocytosis of presynaptic vesicles. The neurotransmitter molecules diffuse into synaptic clefts producing postsynaptic potentials in first order neurons. These graded potentials trigger action potentials and these nerve impulses travel along central nervous system (CNS) axons.
