Eye drops introduced into an eye usually drains through the nasolacrimal duct and into the nasal cavity. In the nasal cavity the eye drop medicine will stimulate the olfactory receptors. Since smell is such an integral part of what we call the sense of taste , the child will so to speak taste the drops placed into his/her eyes.
