Taste buds contain receptors of the taste sense. Most of the 10,000 or so taste buds of an adult are on the tongue ; however, they exist on the soft palate , pharyngeal surfaces and epiglottis. A taste bud consists of three types of epithelial cells . These are the gustatory cells, the supporting cells and the basal cells. Supporting cells, which bear microvilli, surround about 40-50 gustatory receptor cells in each taste bud. Basal (stem) cells are found along the periphery of taste buds. Supporting cells develop from basal cells. In turn gustatory receptor cells develop from supporting cells.
