Answer

Tears or lacrimal fluid is produced by the lacrimal glands of the eyes. Each eye produces about 1.5 ml per day. Tears are a complex fluid of various composition. The primary components are water, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, chloride, magnesium and calcium). Lacrimal proteins include lysozyme IgA, lactoferrin, Mucin and lipids are also important lacrimal components. Tears are produced by the lacrimal glands high in the upper eyelids, and spread over the front of the eyeball by the act of blinking, Tears, moisten, lubricate and clean the eyeballs. It also protects the eye against infection through the actions of lysozyme and immunoglobins (IgA).

Work Step by Step

Tear contains other substances, for example glucose, and dissolved oxygen that are important in supporting the health and functions of cornea and sclera. Each eye normally produces about 1.5 mL of tears per day. Some of this is lost through evaporation, but about 70% is pumped into the nasal cavity.
