Chapter 18 - The Endocrine System - Checkpoint - Page 622: 6

Answer

The power of effect of a given hormone on a target in an environment depends, of course, on the amount of hormone present, and the number of receptors on target cells. However, the presence of other hormones in the same environment may modify the efficacy the given hormone in three possible ways

Work Step by Step

Permissive Effect If thetarges cells were/are exposed to another hormone recently or simultaneously with the given ( current active) hormone. the response of the target cells will be enhanced. This kind of permissive effect is seen in the enhancement of the weak lipolytic effect of epinephrine by the presence of thyroid hormones in the environment. Synergistic effect; In the synergistic effect two hormones acting together produce a greater response than one acting alone. , This is exemplified by the combined greater action of FSH and estrogen on oocyte development . Nether of the individual hormone can successfully complete the process. Antagonistic effects. Hormones are called antagonists if they have opposite effects on a process. For instance insulin and glucagon have opposite effects on glycogen metabolism; insulin stimulates glycogenesis; glucagon promotes glycogen breakdown or glycogenolysis
