The cortex of the adrenal gland derives from mesoderm, but the adrenal medulla derives from ectoderm. The hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex are steroid hormones--glucocorticoids (corticosterone, cortisol), and mineralocorticoids (aldosterone). The adrenal medulla produces the catecholamines epinephrine, and norepinephrine.
