Each hemoglobin molecule can transport up to four O2 molecules and the reason for this is the structure of the hemoglobin molecule itself. Each hemoglobin molecule is made up of four polypeptide chains. Each chain carries one heme group and each heme group carries an iron ion which is binding to one oxygen molecule. Therefore, each heme group carries one O2 molecule and there are four heme groups. In the end, this means that each hemoglobin molecule which is made up of the polypeptide chains and heme groups carries up to four O2 molecules.
