Cells (B cells or T cells) that develop anergy remain alive, but are not able to respond to antigens.
Of the many pre-T cells that go to the thymus only those survive that do not react to self antigens. Elimination is by apoptosis (deletion).
Some of the surviving T-cells become incapable of responding to antigenic stimulation. This is the condition of anergy. Only about 3% of the pre-T cells that go to the thymus for differentiation, emerge as mature immunocompetent T cells
