Globlet cells are modified epithelial cells that occur in respiratory and digestive tracts and in other locations in the body. The modified shape usually has the nucleus and and other cell organelles displaced towards the base by mucin granules - or one large mucin granule. Mucin granules are released ether by exocytosis or the globlet cell may adopt an apocrine method of secretion. Mucin mixes with water to form a thin layer of mucus that protects mucosal cells, provides lubrication, and traps bacteria.
