The myenteric plexus and the submucosal plexus are parts of the enteric nervous system --the so-called"brain of the gut." The system extens from esophagus to anus and comprises millions of neurons. There are sensory neurons , interneurons and motor neurons in the system. The sensory neurons respond to stimuli from chemoreceptors and from mechanoreceptor (stretch receptors). The interneurons communicate between sensory and motor neurons. The myenteric plexus which regulates GI muscle motilty, lies between the circular muscle layer and the longitudinal muscle layer of the tract.
