Cyanide adversely affects aerobic cellular respiration (Krebs Cycle). When cyanide enters cells it binds to the cytochrome oxidase complex in the inner mitochondrial membranes. The binding of the CN- ion to cytochrome oxidase prevents the transport of electrons to oxygen in the electron transport chain of the Krebs cycle. This makes it impossible for the mitochondria to produce ATP, the energy molecule of cells. In this situation the cells of heart and nervous system quickly use up their stored energy and die. When enough cells die, the organism is unable to function and death ensues.
