A carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (drug) decreases the secretion of hydrogen ions (H+) into the urine ; it also reduces the resorption of sodium ions (Na+), and bicrbonate ions (HCO3-) into the blood.

Such a drug will have a diuretic effect, and can cause acidosis ( with fall in pH) due to the decrease bicarbonate anions [HCO3-].
