The stage of dilation can last for approximately 6-12 hours. During this period there are regular contractions of the uterus; the amnion should rupture ( if it has not done so before) and release amniotic fluid ( water breaks) At the end of this stage, the cervix should be fully dilated( about 4 inches). The next stage is the stage of expulsion.
