The neural tube develops from the the neural fold which develops from the neural plate. The neural crest gives rise to sensory postganglionic neurons of the PNS, the adrenal medulla , the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater, as well as the melanocytes of the skin. In addition the skeletal and connective tissues of the head are derivatives of neural crest cells. Somites form myotomes, dermatomes and sclerotomes. Myotomes develop into skeletal muscles of neck, trunk and limbs; dermatomes develop into connective tissues and dermis of skin; sclerotomes form vertebrae and ribs.
