Chapter 4 - The Tissue Level of Organization - Checkpoint - Page 136: 20

Answer

Neurons ( as distinct from neuroglia) are the specially shaped parenchyma cells of nervous tissue. The three parts of the neuron are the proximal branching dendrites, the media cell body and the the long slender distal portion called the axon. Each of these parts have distinct functions.

Work Step by Step

The short branches of the dendrites receive and input stimuli into the neuron. The cell body of the neuron contains its nucleus, most of its cytoplasm and organelles, and coordinates and directs the metabolism and physiology of the of the nerve cell. The axon is the most unusual looking part of the neuron: it is usually a long slender cylindrical process. It function is to output stimuli ( action potentials )from one neuron to distal neurons (dendrites) and other cells.
