Chapter 4 - The Tissue Level of Organization - Critical Thinking Questions - Page 141: 2

Answer

Babies, especially premature infants, are at greater risk of illness and death from hypothermia than older children and adults. Babies have relatively little muscle, and they lose heat more easily than adults. Baby fat mainly brown fat, is a heat generating tissue that helps maintain normal temperature in a baby that is unable to generate heat by shivering.

Work Step by Step

Baby fat is not to be despised. A fat baby is more likely to survive infancy than a thin one. For this reason one should not be offended if it is pointed out that one was a fat baby.
