Answer
The integumentary system includes the skin, and its appendages or out growths --hair, and nails.
Work Step by Step
The skin a membrane comprises the epithelial layers of the epidermis and the underlying dense irregular connective tissue ofthe dermis .
The closely related and intimately attached subcutaneous layer of adipose and areolar tissue is sometimes included as part of the skin, and sometimes considered a separate part of the integumentary system. The cells of the integumentary system include keratinocytes, melanocytes, fibroblasts, Langerhans macrophages, Merkel cells , Meissner's corpuscles and Pacinian corpuscles. In addition to these sensory and phagocytic cells , the epidermis of the skin has sensory nerve endings that respond to stimuli with feelings of pain, cold, warmth, tickling, and itching. Blood vessels in the dermis bring in blood that supplies nutrients, and removes waste, as well as contributing to the temperature homeostatic management of the body. . Hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands and their ducts are all important structures of the skin, and hence of the integumentary system.
