The stratum corneum is a tough keratinized almost waterproof layer of the epidermis. However, it can be penetrated by lipophilic substances and certain ionic fluids . The following substances also penetrate the s. corneum more easily than water and hydrophilic substances--iodine, alcohol. EDTA , and hydogen cyanide.
