A fingernail grows at the rate of about 1 mm everyday. This growth is produced by mitosis of matrix cells ( superficial epithelial cells proximal to the nail root). The cut has damaged part of the matrix and the damaged cannot area divide mitotically anymore. Therefore, the damage to the nail in that area is permanent and will not be repaired normally.
