Flat bones of the skull, moat of the facial bones, the mandible and parts of the collar bone (clavicle) develop by intramembranous ossification. most of the other bones of the bod primarily long bone ossify by the endochondral process.

In the intramembranous ossification process, bones form directly in mesenchyme -- layer by layer of membrane-like sheet. In contrast endochodral ossification occurs in hyaline cartilage --which is derived from mesenchyme.
