The surfaces of bones have two kinds of so-called surface markings that are not present at birth ; these are, (1). depressions or openings and (2),processes. Depressions and openings are formed in response to tension exerted on the developing bone by ligaments, tendons or fascias. 1. Depressions and openings allow the passage of soft tissue structures such as blood vessels, nerves , ligaments or tendons. They also facilitate the formation of joints.
