The false pelvis is the part of the pelvis above the pelvis brim. It is clinically important because it supports and protects vital organs of the abdomino-pelvic cavity. Some of these organs are the upper urinary bladder, the lower intestines in both sexes, also the uterus, ovaries and oviducts in females. The true pelvic is inferior to the pelvic brim ; it has an inlet and an outlet. It is important because contains and protects the vagina, the cervix, part of the uterus in the female, and the prostate in males.

The false pelvis is important for weight bearing and protection during pregnancy. The true pelvis is more important during parturition . The baby must pass along the pelvic axis through the outlet of the true pelvis to see the light of day. A small outlet in the true pelvis spells trouble during child birth.
