The scaphoid bone is one of the four bones in the proximal row of the carpals. The others are the the lunate , the triquetrum, and the pisiform. The scaphoid is on the thumb side and faces the distal end of the radius. The scaphoid is frequently broken in that human population cohort that is physically active. The fracture occurs most frequently when a subject tries to break his/her fall with outstretched arms. People who practice soccer, skiing, biking, skating etc., often sustain scaphoid fractures as well as Colles fractures of the radius.
