Chapter 9 - Joints - Figure 9.1 - Page 260: 1

Answer

In synarthroses there is no movement between the bones that are connected by the joint. This is the case in sutures between some cranial bones in adults. A good example is the suture joint between frontal and parietal bone in adults. In syndesmoses joints there is more connective tissue (that forms a ligament) between component bones of the joint. As a consequence theree is a little movement-- more than in sutures. Joints that are capable of this limited amount of movement are labeled amphiarthroses.

Work Step by Step

In synarthroses joints there is no movement between the bones in the adult animal. This is the case in sutures between some cranial bones in adults There is a limited amount of movement in the distal anterior tibio-fibular joint, as there is between teeth and their sockets in the mandible and maxilla. In the latter case, the syndesmoses of teeth and jawbones, the periodontal ligament facilitates the movements that qualify the latter joints as amphiarthroses .
