Chapter 1 - Review Questions - Page 38: 4

Answer

Lamark's hypothesis for evolution (the theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics) is that if an organism changes during life to adapt to its environment, the changes are then passed along to its offspring. For example, if a giraffe stretched its neck out to reach tree leaves and developed a longer neck, the offspring of this giraffe would in turn have a longer neck. However, evidence found in the fossil record supports Darwin's hypothesis of evolutionary change occurring gradually along a length of time, and rejects Lamark's hypothesis.
