The cytosol of the cell is the jelly-like interior on the inside of the cell that is not in the membrane bound organelles. The cytosol is composed of small and large molecules and is imperative to the cells survival by being the site of chemical reactions like the early breakdown of nutrient molecules and proteins being made by ribosomes.

The cytosol is jelly-like because of the compact nature of all of the molecules that compose the cytosol. If all of the organelles were removed from the cell, the cytosol would fill the space in the interior of the cell.
