Three main categories of stains are: 1. Simple stain: Only one type of dye is used. They are mostly used to observe size and shape of bacteria, however, type of bacteria cannot be determined. 2. Differential stains: More than one type of dyes are used. They are used when we need o differentiate between types of bacteria. 3. Special stains: They are developed for a specific special purpose and can only be used for that purpose.
