General Purpose Medium: This is usually a complex medium and is used to culture variety of microbes. Examples are brain heart infusion agar and nutrient agar. Selective Medium: It is used to culture only a specific type of microbes. Examples are Yeast extract, malt extract agar and MacConkey Agar. Differential Medium: It is used to differentiate between types of bacteria, etc. In this medium, every type will look different. Examples are Blood agar, urea broth, etc. Enriched Medium: This is standard medium which is enriched by addition of serum or blood. It is also used for the growth of fastidious organisms. Examples are alkaline peptone water, chocolate agar, etc.
