The leading cause of nontraumatic blindness in humans is trachoma. Trachoma is an infectious disease, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. The eyelids of someone who is infected with this infection may become rough or hard on the inside, which can breakdown the surface of the eye, thus leading to eventual blindness.
